New Website
Hey guys.
Big news here is that I have purchased a domain and a 4 year hosting plan. We’ve sold out and we’re going mainstream. What I’d like from you guys: ideas and suggestions. Please make them in the comment section.
What would you like to see on the new site? Someone mentioned a forum, which is a good idea. Anything else?
July 2, 2010 at 4:30 pm
Something I think would be awesome: archived games.
Like, entire/edited games.
For those in the know:
1. Would that be legal?
2. Anyone here good with video editing and want this task? I’ll give you a good reference.
It would be awesome to have a downloadable archive of every game from 2010 onward.
July 2, 2010 at 4:32 pm
Two other ideas I had:
1. A database of game stats/box scores, etc.
2. A collection of all recruiting information (JackBeav put something like this together…it would be a matter of integration).
3. Collection of historical stats for all sports (well, the three men’s sports I discuss here).
I’m pretty good with computers and such, so I feel I could do all of this, but I’m not positive until I dig in.
Alright, hit me with more ideas…
July 6, 2010 at 7:57 am
Edited like the NFL Network Replays/Rewind, or whatever they call them. I love those. Those. They cut out all the fluff and basically just show play after play, back to back. You can watch an entire game in less than an hour.
July 2, 2010 at 4:33 pm
AWESOME!!!!
July 2, 2010 at 4:34 pm
love the idea of a forum and an archive.
suggestions
-a no ban policy
-make a wiki of all the users on here
-open registration for the forum
-make me a mod
July 2, 2010 at 4:45 pm
beavgirl, it’s as if you read my mind.
i was just thinking of a wikipedia.
July 2, 2010 at 5:00 pm
Maybe a way to gather all news…? like, have a “news” button and it will automatically gather all things beaver related each morning. Hm. I might be getting in over my head…
July 2, 2010 at 5:06 pm
wow yeah, kind of like google reader? that would be great.
July 3, 2010 at 9:22 am
I use Beaver Sports News currently, but it would be cool to have it on your website.
July 2, 2010 at 6:02 pm
I’d like to see some QUALITY photos posted and maintained to be kept current (weekly during season, monthly or less on off-season?). I recognize that’s subjective, and from my own limited experiences I know how hard it is to capture good sports photos, but I think that would be great; even if they have to be obtained from other sources and used with appropriate agreements.
The recruiting portion could have a nice map representation of the spatial extent of recruiting and verbals.
The database could also have graphical representation of data, which, when done thoughtfully, really brings out critical points of emphasis, comparison, contrast….
More thoughts later.
Congrats and glad to hear it, I look forward to it.
July 2, 2010 at 6:37 pm
angry, what do you think the color scheme should be? I like the grey/black background and white text on this site but i’m not sure it would work on a forum or home page setting. at the same time, this background is recognizable as your blog. what does everyone else think?
July 2, 2010 at 8:01 pm
I love the suggestions and the work Angry. As far as video, I don’t know if it is legal, I think it is owned by NCAA and the broadcast company. If it is legal, I think it would be badass to have that footage available.
I think the game stats and box score would also be a great idea. Running stats for the athletes would be cool. Honestly, I don’t know where to get the info other than just grab it from other websites such as ESPN, would be cool though.
ObjCritic, you mentioned photos. Again, if you just go to ESPN/CBS they usually have a few good ones from the games. I pick and choose what I like but I have a bunch right now that I use as my screen saver. I bet that it is legal to grab these photos provided that you cite the source. Only grip is make sure that you have the names of players correct. I know some people here follow Ted Miller on ESPN, his lunch links keep going to a newspaper in Arizona that was talking about Dean’s suspension. The pic on the article says that his TD reception in Reser is over Kaulin Krebs (who we all know is white) when it was actually over Dockery. Egregious mistake.
Also, a bit much to ask but mobile compatibility? I love viewing the blog on my phone at work/school. That is why I often don’t reply, it is a pain in the ass to a reply on my phone. Great work Angry, keep it coming.
July 2, 2010 at 8:02 pm
Also, a great place to get stat information for football is the media guide. Last year it came out digitally, it has a running post of record holders and what not. I have a media guide (hardbound), from two years ago. It has top 10 stat leaders in most major categories, it is way cool.
July 2, 2010 at 8:41 pm
Thanks for the feedback.
July 3, 2010 at 1:26 pm
Wonder if you could just run a line of text across the bottom similar to a watermark (but not partially transparent) stating something to the like of “Video property of _____”? Not sure, but I really like that idea of video too. That would be something pretty substantial to be offered by your site angry. Worth checking into at least!
July 11, 2010 at 6:22 pm
I added mobile compatibility to the new site tonight. Good idea, and one I’d never think of since I hate using my phone for data/web.
July 2, 2010 at 8:42 pm
Color scheme is a good point, Beavgirl. Would a white background be too “happy” for a “cynical” site?
I was thinking black header, white background, black text, and splashes or orange where I see fit…
July 2, 2010 at 8:42 pm
Fonts are another thing to consider…
I’m not a graphic designer in the least. So…hm.
July 2, 2010 at 8:59 pm
it’s easier on the eyes too -_-
orange for links. etc
July 2, 2010 at 11:37 pm
sounds good
July 2, 2010 at 11:44 pm
We’ll need an ignore function for the forum, so that… you know… you all don’t have to read any of my comments if you don’t want to.
July 3, 2010 at 4:51 am
Yes, definitely!
Make it easy to close your eyes to unpopular ideas!
After all, isn’t that what “angry” is so angry about… people deciding that they wanted a way to no longer have to even see his posts?
July 3, 2010 at 9:44 am
If you didn’t want to see my posts, you could have just chose not to click on them. Intolerance and self-control, or lack thereof, are you issues. Your argument is essentially “I am here today reading your blog because I never wanted to read your posts again.”
Good one.
July 3, 2010 at 9:35 am
Is that what you call a ban?
The vile filth that immature stalker kiddies bring from their den of dishonor hardly qualifies as ‘unpopular ideas’. But they also should never be stopped from posting whatever they like whenever they like.
It’s just that decent people also use the internet, and they don’t need to subjected to the Blitz filth when visiting any site not called Blitz. There needs to be a functions by which individuals can protect their children from viral Blitz stalkers and their filthy minds.
I’m not saying the world wouldn’t be better if the morons who pay for free information were all identified and confined to their little rathole. I’m just saying that individuals need to have the choice whether or not to ‘ignore’ the vile language, ideas, actions, etc. which ooze from Blitz.
No less than decent person deserves the language, stalking, fraud, pedophile, and domestic violence ideas that Blitzers constantly spread when they have the inclination. So why should half-decent or even decent people be forced to read their tripe if they choose not to?
This isn’t a case of people choosing to be morons who waste their money on free information only to be surprised to be subjected to infirm and cloistered ideals. This is a case of people looking for the free-flowing, broad expanse of real ideas only to be subjected to the leakage which occurs from the rathole site which cloisters its infirm ideals.
That should be simple enough to understand. Yes?
July 3, 2010 at 9:49 am
Jeez man, take it easy
July 3, 2010 at 10:23 am
I’m just toying with their little minds. The violence/stalking/fraud/language issues with Blitz posters are all real. And their hypocrisy is stupefying. I went back to find the posts where one Blitzer suspected to be someone named JPtheBeaver was posting a curse every other word and suggesting bad things (I mean really bad) happen to children in his vicinity. There are some really really ugly minds in the Blitz cabal…
… and it’s fun to throw big words and ideas at them just to watch their heads explode.
July 3, 2010 at 10:24 am
Can’t find the post… it was hoops season, and those look like they’re gone.
July 3, 2010 at 10:30 am
The kicker is how they play up the “we are so positive” and family atmosphere angle.
July 3, 2010 at 6:03 pm
You know that they use college students as reporters too right? I don’t wanna hate on college students because I just graduated but the point should made, these aren’t even full-fledged professionals.
July 2, 2010 at 11:49 pm
pls peaple Don,t A wate time the computer there many thing outs side too put =-0
July 2, 2010 at 11:58 pm
A lot of good ideas. I don’t know what some of these things would look like, but it would be interesting to get more historical information. For instance the 28 year stretch. Maybe in the cynical spirit of this site a forum called Monday morning quarterback or coach. I guess this will be a work in progress.
July 3, 2010 at 6:04 pm
Castor, I love this idea. Recap the game on Sundays/Mondays and have a segment that is full of criticism. I know angry does this already but I love the idea.
July 3, 2010 at 12:31 am
Here you go. This is the fansite to beat.
http://www.theraider.net/
July 3, 2010 at 7:40 am
wow. no thanks.
i’m all about simplicity.
July 3, 2010 at 9:40 am
You miss its simplicity because of the graphics. Look at the functions presented… the tabbed navigation at the top and the three-column format. Just remove all pictures and color, and replace it with your own.
July 3, 2010 at 9:48 am
It’s still not what I’m going for. I want a blog look/feel on the front page, and functionality (forums, searches, databases, etc) all around it. I started last night; it looks pretty good for a day’s work.
July 3, 2010 at 3:49 pm
http://www.plaintxt.org/
(i kid i kid)
July 3, 2010 at 4:48 am
Call the new site “Who is Terry Baker?”.
Other than that, keep doing what you do… just keep stealing content and reporting it as your own.
July 3, 2010 at 9:51 am
Let me guess, you read Drudge right?
July 3, 2010 at 12:59 pm
As a subscriber to beaverblitz.com and reader of pure-orange.net, I’ll have to agree with other commets that your posts and blogs usually copy their information. I don’t care about recruiting news or game recaps since I get that other places, but original content and thoughts would be nice. You’ll be competing with pure-orange for message boards so I doubt you will get much response from them but who knows…
July 3, 2010 at 2:26 pm
Hey beaverfuzzball.
I’m not “competing” with anyone at pure-orange because you are all delusional via bias, whereas I speak the truth. This blog (and my new site) are opinion driven pieces based on reality/fact, etc.
July 3, 2010 at 3:29 pm
Relax. Why the name calling? I’m giving you honest feedback. There are already two dozen Beaver Athletics websites, blogs, message boards, etc…and only two of them are worth participating in or reading.
Call your site “streetcorner soapbox” since it sounds like someone holding up signs and shouting. There’s nothing original about the concept. All fans see the same articles on the internet as you, and we all think we’re are right.
July 3, 2010 at 3:31 pm
If you say so.
July 3, 2010 at 4:03 pm
I’m not saying this isn’t going to be a fulfilling endeavor for you. It might be the greatest accomplishment in your life for all I know… You asked for feedback, and I gave you feedback.
July 3, 2010 at 5:35 pm
Do you notice how you feel the need to come to my site and put me down, yet I don’t even look at your site? Do you understand how much that says about the dynamics here?
You are a dinosaur, and you know that people actually listen, and this scares you. You are a sad, sad man.
July 3, 2010 at 3:29 pm
blitz/pure-orange/angrybeavs all take the same information and interpret them in different ways.
everyone has bias, that’s what opinion driven pieces are :p
July 3, 2010 at 3:56 pm
That’s not accurate. BeaverBlitz is an online magazine that offers original daily news and features on OSU sports and recruiting. That’s why people subscribe. Both Blitz and PO.net offer the community aspect to swap and share ideas.
This new site would be redundant with pure-orange’s concept except there’s one fan that features his posts. I’m not trying to upset anyone, but I’m just right and you can catch my opinions on Blitz and PO.net.
RJ
July 3, 2010 at 6:35 pm
okay will def check your opinions out thanks!
July 3, 2010 at 4:32 pm
I do not subscribe to beaverblitz, So I do care for recruiting news which I do not need to pay for.
July 3, 2010 at 1:52 pm
Can someone look into the legality of archiving video/games? If it is not for resale is it legal?
Does anyone tivo games, have video editing skills, and want the job of recording games and uploading files? Assuming it’s legal, of course.
July 3, 2010 at 4:38 pm
Videos do not necessarily need to reside on-site. There are a number of sites where you can upload video files as files, like mediafire.com, sharehub.com or jumbofiles.com
July 3, 2010 at 4:03 pm
What kind of forum are you going to use? The only good ones I have ever seen use vBulletin. They might be pricey but they definitely seem worth it.
July 3, 2010 at 10:25 pm
I’m building a custom forum.
Do you guys think it would be better to import all the threads from wordpress to the new site or just leave them here and link? Problem with importing is I lose the comments (shows the correct number, but they are missing) due to the database not knowing how to handle comments from users who do not exist.
July 4, 2010 at 3:06 pm
Happy 4th!
July 5, 2010 at 1:05 am
cheers, mate.
July 6, 2010 at 7:59 am
I think I’ve linked it before, but this side that some Husker fan runs is really good, maybe you could snake some ideas…
http://www.huskermax.com/
July 6, 2010 at 11:12 am
yeah that site is good. angry, we need tshirts too!
http://huskermax.net/store/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=39
July 6, 2010 at 2:28 pm
that is a really nice site for someone looking to make a career out of sports information. that’s not really my motivation. i’m going to stick with the blog format, as my interest/passion is filling in media gaps and speaking realistically about our players, school, etc. that being said, i have a couple (new) content ideas i think people will enjoy. i love history as well, so archives interest me, which is why i was thinking of saving video and box scores in a database. i don’t want a fancy multimedia site. think of a clean/lean blog with some possible bells and whistles (dependent upon my ability to code such things). in short, keep your expectations reasonable.
July 6, 2010 at 12:52 pm
Hey y-all:
Obviously the user name says most of what you need to know, but just wanted to add that I am not a pimple faced kid that will flame on anything. I really enjoy your blog’s mature nature and honesty. I realize I am in the enemy’s camp, but I am level headed and love to read real fans talk about football from a somewhat normal position. You guys seem sincere and I can totally appreciate that. Good luck this year. I have no idea what to expect from both of our teams in terms of play. Yikes the season is getting close.
July 6, 2010 at 1:58 pm
I like it. Why can’t more dudes be like uofduck?
Of course we both are sicked by each other’s teams and will roast each other as much as possible whenever possible, but a true fan, will call out their own teams issues and give credit where credit is due to the other.
I have a tough call. I didn’t grow up the haters that my Dad and Grandpa did, but sometimes do feel the…let’s call it heat of the rivalry. However, since I’m a Pac 12 fan, I still found myself, as did my Father and Grandfather rooting for the Ducks in the big game. I had several from my H.S. play for the Ducks, much more and closer in Graduation than for the Beavers, so around Penn State Rosebowl era and several years after, I did root for the Ducks as well.
I’ve always thought that the last two years, though favoring the Ducks in outcome, was the best way for the Pac 10 to finish. The two Oregon Schools (who would’ve thunk it) vying for the Rose Bowl. Hopefully more to come, and in other sports!
Living in Omaha, I was a huge Dana Altman fan, so tough as it was to see him go to the Green, he’s a great guy and I wish him all the luck. Aside from the obvious, I think he and Robinson or sort of cut from the same mold…or made of the same ‘substance’.
July 6, 2010 at 2:30 pm
This guy is a good Duck fan. I admire the Ducks Machiavellian approach, even if it does cause me internal (moral) conflict. To win at all costs…it has validity. I talked about this all the time on this blog. The thing is, there’s an ideal balance that isn’t being struck with either program. In other words, I wish the Beavs had a little more Duck in them, and I wish the Ducks had a little more Beav.
July 6, 2010 at 5:08 pm
of course we love what he writes. this blog is dedicated to putting a negative spin on oregon state.
July 6, 2010 at 5:27 pm
I see in my referrals you guys are coming over here from http://duckterritory.com
Did someone post a link to this forum over there? What are they saying/why did this blog come up?
July 7, 2010 at 12:05 am
What’s negative about it?
I’m trying to understand why people think real criticism is negative. Sometimes the tone is negative, but that doesn’t really change the content. It just makes some readers squeal petty cries of fouls imagined.
If you told some readers that it rains during the winter months here in Oregon, they would say that was a negative spin. What the hell is negative about that? It just happens.
So what’s negative about wanting more from our team? Is it negative to want to play in the Rose Bowl? Well, then every Duck and Beaver fan I know are extremely negative always.
Is it negative to point to and shore up the weaknesses on a team from week to week based on the game film and outcome? Then tell me a team (any team) that isn’t more negative than this blog the day after a game.
I think the problem some fans have with this site is that they don’t understand that college sports is really a business. They long for the days of rah rah and loyalty. It doesn’t work like that anymore.
You can say this blog is cold and hard. You can even say it sounds grumpy every once in a while. But there is rarely a negative spin on the Beavs.
I subscribe to the school of honest thought. If I lie to myself about my team, then I am putting more of a negative spin on their story than any ugly truth I could utter. My expectations need to be real… not too high or too low… and definitely not apathetic.
For instance, how many Duck blogs pointed out that the Beavs provided Ohio State a perfect blueprint for beating the read option and predicted the Buckeyes would beat it? How many lamented that the Ducks defense was poor at best last year? How many really truly worry about Wilcox and his defensive schemes working over a Duck offense that will take some time to gel next year?
Check that middle one. I hear it almost on a daily basis during football season while living and working in Eugene/Springfield… Aliotti is a horrible defensive coordinator. It’s almost a mantra.
July 7, 2010 at 10:12 am
real criticism is great. Its the way Angry goes about it, that makes him come off like a flaming attention whore.
July 7, 2010 at 4:19 pm
Bigot.
July 7, 2010 at 10:30 am
You mean like his immature penchant for going to other websites and insulting people.
I would have to agree with that one. That’s about as negative and unimaginative as it gets. But that has nothing to do with content. If he were strictly an insult machine, then he would be relegated to the dregs called… well… where are you now?
July 7, 2010 at 3:12 pm
I don’t to go other sites and insult people.
July 7, 2010 at 3:48 pm
I am not insulting you, I have a cynical view of you. Much like you have a cynical view of OSU.
I see you can dish it out, but you can’ take it.
Weak sauce mate!
July 7, 2010 at 3:51 pm
If you’re going to have this webiste and blog and continue to post ‘cynical’ BS. Then I hope you have thick enough skin to take it, when people call you on it.
So far, you haven’t shown the ablity to do that. Your just hiding behind your computer, making claims about yourself. Sorry bud, I find that weak.
July 7, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Still waiting on an actual criticism….
July 7, 2010 at 7:37 am
I suppose if you don’t blow smoke, candy coat and deceive yourself to make yourself feel better, than sure…it’s negative.
Not being in Pac 10 country anymore, I get to see the things a bit from an outsiders perspetive. I have negative thoughts about Oregon States based on what I can see and peruse from an outsider’s view a bit more than I used to. I used to HATE Nebraska. Always rolling over patsies, a weight room that used to have a shower room bigger than Oregon State’s entire facility…but then I realized these people live and breath their Huskers. They will them to be good. They had the Callahan debacle (which actually procuced a couple good years and some quality athletes), but that was rectified quickly. The fans won’t stand for it, yet they will suppor them through it.
The difference, and most people just don’t agree with me and that’s fine, is that I just think Corvallis is too small. Most schools don’t reside in L.A. or a huge city…but they are more like Eugene. Minus the Student body, you’d have to have almost every citizen of Corvallis buy a ticket to sell that place out. Not so in Eugene…or Austin, or Columbus, or Lincoln. Seems Oregon State might have best been suited to be in Salem or something. It’s something we’ll never know if it would make a difference, but I just can’t help think about it when I look at populations of these College Towns. They aren’t small. Corvallis is close to being Smallish.
All I know, is given the big time cash the Ducks have had in their coffers, and the media that has surrounded them lately, I’d be a bit negative I suppose if I was looking at the facts. Wouldn’t mean I didn’t love my team tough. As a Beaver, I wish I had more, and they should be doing better…I want more as a fan. But they make the most of what they have usually, which is nice (smaller facilities, smaller stadium/crowds, smaller donation base, fewer starred athletes). That’s a positive. They’ll never be USC, Nebraska or the Ducks. They’ll just have to do it right and the best way the can. We’ll be sure to tell them how too!
July 7, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Where does Corvallis rank in terms of DI football towns? The only one I can think of a smaller one off the top of my head is Moscow, Idaho (Vandals) and Pullman.
July 7, 2010 at 4:06 pm
I can think of Ames, Morgantown, Oxford and Blacksburg also. Iowa City is slightly larger, but it also has no real proximity to a major metropolitan area.
July 7, 2010 at 12:03 pm
Look, if you disagree with something posted, try something novel like saying you disagree and posting your reasons why. Your feelings have nothing to do with the content. Your analysis does.
What I do when I disagree with tone is speak to the tone of an argument. If it’s immature, I call it out. If it’s unwarranted, I say why. If it’s a little harsh, I say so, and I say why I think that.
None of that affects the content, and exhibiting simple faith is no way for a fan to exist. Sports fandom covers a wide range of emotions and competitive spirit. If you want the discontent within your fan base to disappear, you should do something more than insult the fans who are discontent. Make their wonts for a better team/school/community disappear. The only way to do that is to legitimately ask hard questions and to doggedly pursue the answers. Musingly asking an open-ended ‘I wonder’ to the world doesn’t cut it.
Doing more with less is great. Now let’s take the next step and ask our team/school/community to become a real force in the world and do more with more. Being relegated to also-ran coulda-been status gets a little old after a while.
I’m not satisfied with my university’s perception as a low-rank institution for higher learning despite objective data to the contrary. I can reference studies and data sets which conclude our high esteem among peer groups worldwide because I have been trained to find those references at my university. High school students have the same resources available, but the ease of picking up a payola report conducted by US News trumps anything remotely resembling real research and gives them that negative perception.
And that perception affects our sports teams negatively as well. A friend of mine here in Eugene who works at the UO knows that I covet Tyler Johnstone as an O-lineman for the Beavs. We discussed his recruitment the other day, and it seems he really wants to be an engineer. He’s also enamored with UO. We both had a good chuckle at that, because we both know that the UO engineering syllabus is pretty much ‘go to OSU’.
Other than psychology, marketing and architecture/design, UO is second rate (at best) in all fields in the state of Oregon. But the perception amongst the unlearned is contrary to reality, and I see nothing being done by my university to change that perception. That is a very real criticism which has been discussed on this site more than once.
Saying someone is a poor football player speaks nothing to their character unless they have been identified as having all-world physical abilities. Even that only suggests that they don’t use their physical abilities to their fullest extent ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD. They could be the greatest people to have ever walked this earth, but that doesn’t make them good football players. That is in no way a knock on their being. It is just a cold, hard fact. Why would any objective reader possibly get upset about this? Why would any honest subjective reader get upset?
The simple answer is that they do not have the capacity to understand reality, and they don’t have the competitive spirit to want to understand.
July 7, 2010 at 4:36 pm
So who do you guys see as the Dux QB. Who ever it is better have steel nuts walking into Tennessee’s place in his second real game.
By the way, my feeling is that BSU beats Va-Tech but lets down against the Beavs. That becomes huge for you all. I see BSU handling Quizz, but not the speed of Elder Rodgers.
I know this post is all over the place, but how did your spring go? I thought ours was pretty decent, but who really knows cuz playing yourself tells you nothing. Cheers Beavs
July 7, 2010 at 5:11 pm
You don’t have to be nice and end with “cheers beavs” if you don’t want to. We won’t ban you for being rude. Just an FYI.
I think the Beavs will score on BSU. I see Wheaton and both Rodgers having big games. Unfortunately, I see Kellen Moore going wild, and the Beavs defense being a step slow and out of position. That game will be a loss.
July 7, 2010 at 5:13 pm
uofduck, what are they saying about this blog on duckterritory? i see a bunch of referrals from the forum, but i can’t read it.
July 7, 2010 at 6:27 pm
It looks like they’re linking to the previous post about academic casualties. One can only wonder what they’re saying about it.
Btw, Akuna and Crichton are in the registry.
July 10, 2010 at 5:16 pm
“Btw, Akuna and Crichton are in the registry.”
Rivals is stealing your info, Jack. A guy over there just wrote, “The newest I’ve heard is that Akuna and Crichton are now in.”
Hmm, wonder where he heard that!
July 11, 2010 at 12:07 am
The thing is… I don’t care. Whatever I post on here is fair game. It’s not like I’m so full of myself that I would charge anyone to read my garbage… and then claim some imaginary proprietary right to that info.
They’re welcome to any information that I may know. I assume that their looking constitutes their asking. So ask away.
A part of what I rail against is the self-imposed segregation of these infant minds. They cloister themselves in a familiar darkness and slap each other with wet noodles. Then they step into the light and curse its burn.
Anything I can do to break that cycle is a win in my book.
July 7, 2010 at 9:15 pm
Yep, there was linked on the academic casualties. Some think it is great fun, others remind that we had some bad ones on our d-line recruits a few years ago, so we know the pain and frustration. All in all, you blog is given a fair shake as you keep it real. I havent look at the posting recently, so I will go check and get back to you.
I suppse the Cheers Beavs was a bit over the top, cuz, well, I am a duck through and through. Just wanted to be polite as a guest in your back yard and all. That being said, I can not tell you how much I hope you throttle BSU.
PS, Moore is deadly accurate and very illusive for a slow, short, and skinny kid. He just has a knack for sliding away from pressure. It can be really frustrating for d-player to work so hard to get to him to have him just slide by the pressure.
July 7, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Well that’s good. Our DE’s were a step slow last year, so if that holds up this year the DT’s will get a good push up front, and Moore will slide right into the late-coming DE’s.
July 7, 2010 at 10:57 pm
I see Costa starting the season. I see Thomas taking over about three games in when Costa gets broken… and lasting maybe four games himself. Hawkins will score on his first play from scrimmage to electrify the crowd. Then he’ll step on a lineman’s foot on his next play, causing some freak injury that snaps all sorts of tendons and bones in the foot.
Then everyone in the Duck camp will spend the week of Civil War wondering if they should burn Bennet’s red shirt year or go with a walk-on… because the Ducks will be 9-2 (7-1) heading into the game, and the Rose Bowl will be on the line. They start Bennett, and he’s broken on the second play.
The Beavs win the Civil War and finish 8-4 (7-2) and in a four way tie for first in the conference with UO, UCLA and Arizona… all teams the Beavs beat. But because of some strange new Pac 10 tie-breaker rule about taking the team playing their home games closest to Pasadena, the Beavs are shut out of the Rose Bowl once again.
Chip Kelly manages to talk a recruit on an official visit to play QB for them in the Caesar’s Salad Bowl, and he looks really good.
Then Chip walks out of his contract with its 20 win out-clause (19 regular season wins), and he heads to Michigan where Rich Rod has pulled out all his hair and is being dragged off to the loony bin. After a 20 city worldwide whirlwind tour lasting 8 months, Pat Kilkenny announces that the Ducks have found their new head coach… Mike Bellotti.

We have to endure google ads to read your shit now? You’re a sell out just like all the rest.
July 8, 2010 at 7:29 am
what the hell is google ads, and what the hell are you talking about?
July 8, 2010 at 8:02 am
If you don’t have a free wordpress handle, then you have to look at adds on any wordpress blog. It’s always been that way.
July 8, 2010 at 7:25 am
Jack:
My vision is slightly different. I see bringing in Costa during the 3rd quarter of the Civil War because Thomas has already secured the Heisman and the lead is more than suffient (please tell me you know I am only joking here) and Costa lays down on his back in the first play from scimage with his feet up in the air only to have Paea jump on him and then Costa starts his feet running and spins Paea like a log in the air – cartoon style. A fitting end to Costas career at UofO and even though he didn’t play much in his career, he becomes a UofO god. This is replayed over and over and over again on Sports Center for the next 100 years.
PS, All in all, i’d say its a win-win because we both get a huge amount of publicity.
July 8, 2010 at 8:05 am
You forgot to add that Costa would break a leg in the process, but he would rub some dirt on it and walk it off, further solidifying his legend.
Then the Ducks’ bench would carry him off the field and up the tunnel, leaving the crowd at Reser wondering what the hell is going on… since it’s still the middle of the third quarter.
July 8, 2010 at 8:42 am
Well played my friend, well played.
July 8, 2010 at 7:46 am
Okay Angry, as promised, here is the latest “typical” post on OSU’s recruiting efforts as of late on the other blog:
They actually have 9 commits now. Its weird because they’ve gotten them all in the past week & almost all of them are 2*s or unrated. Almost like they just got desperate for some commits so they went after a bunch of nobodies to just fill up their class a little bit. Glad I’m not a beev, thats for sure. You’ve been in the top half of the pac10 for a decade & you’re fighting teams like tulane, north texas, northern arizona, northern colorado, san jose st & eastern kentucky for recruits. Just sad.
July 8, 2010 at 8:03 am
I agree with a lot of that, but 3 of our recruits look really good. Zimmerman, Storm Woods, and Reynolds. Ashton has good potential (reminds me of Jake Plummer combined with Colt McCoy), but he would be further down the line.
The Beaver plan is to get 2-star recruits who they don’t plan to play until their junior years. By that point, they become 3-star guys, but they put a lot of investment and resources to build them up to that point. They fatten them up, get them stronger, faster, etc. The Duck get 4-star guys who can step in by sophomore (or earlier). The Ducks, generally speaking, recruit better speed, too. That the Ducks recruit a higher caliber player means they don’t have to develop them as much. This is a good thing IMO, but Beaver fans will point to their (i.e. Beaver) coaches’ player development as a plus. It’s a negative because it means the athletes are not as good straight out of the box.
I don’t buy that recruits won’t come to Corvallis. They do for baseball and basketball (with Robinson at the helm at least). They would for football if we had coaches who could sell the program better.
July 9, 2010 at 10:53 am
You really have NO clue about Riley/OSU’s recruiting and why they do what they do…do you?
July 9, 2010 at 12:25 pm
Poor question. A better criticism would be why you think otherwise.
The evidence suggests that even with player development and team-building better talent steps in earlier in their careers because they are just better.
Unless you really think Quizz, Wheaton and Philipp stink. Or maybe you’re one of those Beav fans who thinks Akuna and Doctor can wait their ‘turn’ in the system because that’s just the way it works… talent be damned.
July 8, 2010 at 8:21 am
Don’t forget Doe on that list.
There are a lot of athletes not yet rated by the recruiting services yet. They start in the South and SoCal, then they look at who is offered by Texas, Florida, Alabama and Oklahoma. Once they’re rated four star or higher Fink offers a scholarship to USC… depending on your rank within your position.
Most kids in the NW will never be rated. I think Will Storey still hasn’t been rated, and he was all-state at LB his junior year. I think the services were confused by his switch to QB (out of necessity). The kids have to attend camps and combines in order to be seen by services… if ratings are what matter to the kids. If not, then go to the camps for the teams you might like to play for and bust your butt in front of the head coach. That’s what half our commits did.
I think the Beavs are getting better at adding speed. Bibbee, Doctor and Akuna are going to make us forget the current crop of LB’s.
Zimmerman and Doe look really fast on tape. Even Woods looks like his long stride is quick. But historically we’ve not coached up the speed recruits as much as we have just average guys.
July 8, 2010 at 8:28 am
Oh yeah, Doe–he looks very good.
I wonder if Ducks watch film on these guys or just look at the ratings. 4 of them look like long-term projects (and possible duds), but the 5 we mentioned all look very good.
July 8, 2010 at 8:48 am
Fair enough, but we do watch film and discuss it a fair amount. Of course a few don’t, because, well I am not sure why because how can you really be a fan of college football and not want to see tape of your incoming players – lame sauce. I will admit we look at stars too – perhaps too much. But don’t kid yourself, everyone does. If the Beavs land a 4 star kid, like Phillips, your fan base is all over his star rating and rejoicing it. I’ve seen it.
July 8, 2010 at 9:03 am
No, I mean do the Duck fans watch film of the Beavers they are bashing. I realize they watch film of their own recruits. I think if you watch film you’ll see 4 very good players, 1 good player (Ashton). The rest are duds at this point who need development.
July 8, 2010 at 10:08 am
Heck no we don’t watch film of your guys before bashing them. Where’s the enjoyment in that? (especially if they are two star kids with small shool offers)
July 8, 2010 at 8:52 am
Actually, the Oregon kids are getting some love. Colt L, White and Owa (from last year) T. Coleman. S. Jenkins = All 4 or 5* kids I believe. I think football is finally emerging in OR/NW.
July 8, 2010 at 10:08 am
The o-line prospects should be fine. Thomas has great upside, and Addie is smart enough to want in on Coach Cav’s system. They’re going to be better than our typical walk-on linemen. But I still want Tyler Johnstone and James Euscher in this class.
That’s one thing that bugs me about this staff. Euscher has great tools, but he’s raw. Greatwood at UO sees his potential, and he can mold him into something good. But he would be awesome with Cav’s tutelage.
I think Ma’ataua Brown stays with UW; Nowicki stays in-state; Mitchell goes to Hollywood; Fa’afoi must be an academic question since he should be recruited by everyone… and isn’t; Aiono committed to Utah yesterday; Hobbi has turned me off from some things I hear about him.
That pretty much leaves us with Jamal Prater, Tyler Johnstone and James Euscher. And we’re going to have to beat out other schools for those kids. I also like Oliver Taylor up in Gig Harbor. He has a nasty streak in him.
I absolutely love Manuia Ioane. And I hear he’s grown an inch since last fall. He would be the greatest ‘feel good’ story ever if he made it to a BCS school and either grew two or three inches or became an Elvis Dumervil type D-lineman. I just don’t think you can teach that bulldog mentality without having one on your roster. Imagine him lining up against some 6’5″ monster five-star talent, getting laughed at, then putting the talent on his back.
July 8, 2010 at 10:28 am
Of course, it would be unfair to just go by one tape on Ioane. Kapolei likes tape. You can see the center play here.
July 8, 2010 at 10:49 am
No offense intended, but not overly impressed. Looks solid on the quick dive plays, but doesnt appear to have much real speed and the holes where there for him. Looks tough enough tho and I like that. But not a game changer.
Got any links to: Zimmerman, Storm Woods, Reynolds. and Ashton?
July 8, 2010 at 12:28 pm
I was giving an extra tape on the center play. The star of the tape above is a fullback prospect… and I guess he’s pretty good if he wants to bulk up and just hit LB’s in the hole in college.
Think of Zimmerman as another Stroughter… only he’s bigger, much stronger and faster.
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5239275
July 8, 2010 at 12:57 pm
I actually don’t see the Stroughter speed comparison. In my book, he looks like a better saftey than reciever because I don’t see the speed you do ala James Rodgers. But I do see a kid fast enoght to close and he hits hard and has good hands for roaming for over thrown balls down-field. Just one man’s opinion.
July 8, 2010 at 1:02 pm
He runs a 4.4 flat out, but you have a good eye for his defensive skills. Most schools stayed away from him because he insisted on playing WR at the next level. Rumors out of Oklahoma are that everyone would offer him at S.
July 8, 2010 at 1:04 pm
Speed is hard to judge on tape sometimes. And 40 times are usually just a “estimate” if you will too. However, he is probably faster than I thought. Good get.
July 8, 2010 at 1:16 pm
Yeah, I don’t know what to trust on 40 times. Are they hand timed? Did your uncle time you?
I think most Beav fans are excited to see someone with more speed than our usual walk-on receivers bring and a willingness to beat up on the secondary over the middle.
July 8, 2010 at 12:31 pm
Storm Woods was hurt in the third game of his junior year, and he didn’t play again. Otherwise, he was on his way to a 2000+ yard, 20+ TD season in one of Texas’ toughest leagues.
July 8, 2010 at 12:38 pm
Looks legit. You won’t like this, but he has a bit of LaGarrett look to him. How big is he? Looks large.
July 8, 2010 at 12:56 pm
6’0″, 205#
July 8, 2010 at 12:59 pm
And I don’t think anyone dislikes Blount’s game. It’s his personality and work ethic that scare a lot of people.
July 8, 2010 at 1:02 pm
Kid looks bigger than that. I thought he looked a full 6′ 2″ 215-ish. Solid build tho.
July 8, 2010 at 1:09 pm
We plan to stretch him on the rack and feed him lots of protein.
July 8, 2010 at 2:06 pm
The first part of that plan was the same plan we had. Put him on the rack sans the protien
July 8, 2010 at 4:19 pm
sounds like a porn i just watched
July 8, 2010 at 1:08 pm
I don’t think we have any tape on Jeremy Reynolds. I thought we did, but maybe we just assumed that his high rankings during his soph and junior years (NUC rankings in the south rated him as the #1 ATH), his coach’s statement that he was a shut-down corner and that we beat out Cal and Michigan was enough for us to like him.
Kenzel Doe wears #8, and I think he likes our current #8. He and Reynolds both run 4.4, and they’re both small (5’8″-5’9″). But we don’t care if the ball goes over the goal line four inches lower than it would with a 6′+ receiver.
July 8, 2010 at 1:49 pm
I don’t know why we went out and got another QB other than we just seem to get one in every class. I think Mannion will be the star after Katz, but we’ll see what Vaz and Lomax have to say about that.
Ashton has his own website. So maybe that plays into it.

July 8, 2010 at 10:52 am
Got a quick one for you guys. I know you love Riley and we think he belongs on Gomer Pile episodes, but most of us think you have outstanding assitant coaches/coordinators that carry the load for “aw shucks” Riley. How does he keep them so long and will he be able to hold on to them forever? Seems like some might what a shot at the head job somewhere?
July 8, 2010 at 1:42 pm
I don’t know where coach Seumalo’s loyalties lie. He’s a damn good D-line coach though. And his kids will probably be at OSU for the next five or six years. So that may keep him in the fold.
Mark Banker is somewhat strange. He and his wife are best friends with the Riley’s, and it sounds like it would take a huge offer for him to be moved. Many Beav fans absolutely hate that he doesn’t allow his corners to peek in the backfield, and some question his talent evaluation when it comes to playing time. It seems his loyalty to Riley extends to players on the field sometimes, and the defense suffers because of it. He eventually comes around to making the objective tweaks necessary, but it hurts sometimes.
Jay Locey is a dream. He has the head coaching experience, and his team building skills are huge.
Then there’s the story about Danny Langsdorf giving his kidney to Coach Cav’s wife. I think Cav stays in Corvallis forever, but Langsdorf is either made coach-in-waiting, or he moves on in a couple years. Someone will want his skills at a mid-major sooner or later.
I don’t know what to think of Reggie Davis. How much coaching has Quizz needed? Maybe the lack of any real back-ups is telling?
Bruce Read and Greg Newhouse do great with the talent they have to deal with. They will look like star coaches in the coming years compared to the last three or so. Talent can do that. I think both are loyal to Corvallis as well… Newhouse more than Read. If you look at a list of the players Newhouse has coached over the last 14 years, you begin to see his skill. Read can probably coach anywhere as a ST coach.
The jury’s still out on Heyward, but that’s because of Banker’s CB rules.
So yeah, the assistants are a pretty good bunch, but it takes one helluva personality to keep them together. Riley’s the only ex-NFL coach I can think of who gets fired but is still loved by the city and ownership that fired him. And Drew Brees has nothing but good things to say about him. So I guess there must be some real hometown cookin’ in the guy’s presence.
I wish he would turn it on for recruiting purposes.
July 8, 2010 at 4:14 pm
I can’t stand Banker. The only thing preventing me from calling for his head is the fear that the next hire would be worse.
July 8, 2010 at 4:15 pm
And yes, this is based solely on the CB play. When Cliff gave me the answer as to why Banker coaches that technique my eyes rolled and head spun. Well, not literally.
July 8, 2010 at 7:24 pm
Beaving a Linfield alum, I’d love to see Langsdorf run the show someday, at least somewhere in D-1. I watched him play a bit, as I was a year behind him and Linfield’s had some decent offenses. He’s young and hopefully will use all those tools to their fullest this year making defenses guess.
Being a San Diego Charger fan (Danny’s Dad is a Charger scout now, coached Danny at Linfield) I loved Riley. They guy didn’t have shit to work with. Pulled off an 8-8 season once I believe, with a tired old Harbaugh at QB.
July 8, 2010 at 1:00 pm
Looks like the Dux may have just landed OL Prater. At least that is the word.
July 8, 2010 at 1:14 pm
Figured that would happen. I’m not as high on him as I am Johnstone and Euscher, but I think he’s really good. Of course, you guys already took the prize with Yruretagoyena.
July 8, 2010 at 1:54 pm
Agree with you on Andre the Giant. Holy cow was that a good get by us. And agree with you on Prater. Good, but not great. Kind of kid you don’t want to turn away, but not the “PLEASE PLEASE come to our school” So, I am happy. I guess the good news is our rival didn’t get him eh?
I’d want Johnstone too. Looks solid.
July 8, 2010 at 2:07 pm
I would say Johnstone ends up a Beaver, because I’ve heard he loves Coach Cavanuagh.
July 8, 2010 at 2:16 pm
“Lucky”
July 9, 2010 at 7:40 pm
I don’t know. A friend of mine told me the other day that he’s really high on UO despite it being a lousy academic fit for him.
July 8, 2010 at 10:40 pm
Hey Beavs, SC loses another:

Angry, maybe you could start another post about recruiting updates…seems we’ve moved there already.
I like it…this is what the blogs are for, you can’t depend on or wait for the local media and one guy has a hard time scouring everything. I like to use this blog to relay some info to my 90 year old Grandpa who loves to talk Beav sports!
July 9, 2010 at 1:26 pm
yeah, good idea. i’ve been busy designing the new site so it’s a bit of a hiatus. i don’t have any strong opinions on anything going on right now. things should pic up with fall camp. i’ll make a “general recruiting” thread tonight and everyone can discuss the past few weeks.
