Update on Possible Academic Casualties

It’s two weeks later and the four guys I named as casualties (Glover, Molesi, Tuivailala, and Welch) still aren’t in the directory. Marable and Fred Thompson also have yet to show. From what I have heard Thompson will definitely get through clearinghouse, while Marable is very likely to do so (has one class to pass). The big news is that the prize of the class (Akuna) is in.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

Sorry things have been so quiet here. I’ve been working on the new site. After trying many different development tools, I’m probably going to stick with a WordPress/blog format. It’s just best for what I do. People expecting a grand change will be disappointed. There will be many improvements though. So far, they are:

1. A forum for discussion where any user can create topics and post.

2. A new content type where I rate recruits based on their film and keep score of my record against scout and rivals.

3. A nice clean layout. A lot of white space. The idea behind the new design is to show that orange and black can be attractive colors. This “theme” we’re using now is pretty hideous.

4. Our own domain instead of a wordpress domain. This improves the blog’s credibility while also providing scalability into the future.

5. Improved comment section. Instead of the thin/nested comments we have here, on the new site we’ll be able to keep strings going longer.

I’m working on a few other improvements as well. I hope to finish this up and be running by the time fall camp starts. There’s very little to discuss right now, so back to work.

Looking forward to seeing the new site. I’m sure it’s gonna look great. I STILL need to write something and contribute to the cause.

    • angrybeaver Says:

Oh yeah, I remember you mentioning that. Well, you’ll have the forums as your outlet now. You can write anything you want there and publish it on your own. That reminds me–I thought a good idea would be to (a) get interviews from recruits via making contact on facebook etc or (b) have the local students in Corvallis track people down for audio interviews. You know, asking the tough questions instead of standard fluff.

    • JackBeav Says:

Careful with the contacts. The NCAA recognizes blogs and services as institutional contacts if they are specific to one university. So Rivals, Scout and ESPN get a pass as news sites so long as the contact comes from a national or conference-wide source. Once that blogger concentrates on one school, they become an institutional contact, and you can’t contact friends, family or the athlete themselves directly.

I believe the NCAA rules are different for actual reporters like Cliff or Buker. But they might avoid any confusion by simply doing what bloggers do when they don’t want to put their school at risk of a secondary violation. You can call (or email) the athlete’s coach or school administrators and ask them to forward a request for an interview with all your info. The athlete can call you all s/he wants without violating contact rules.

With that in mind, you should include a sticky post at the head of every forum category stating such a policy. I believe Alex Parker is the compliance officer at OSU. You can fire off an email to him stating your wish to be responsible with your blog, and could he give you an official statement which you could share with your readers.

      • angrybeaver Says:

        a. What if you know an athlete at the school/are friends with them, and they give you information?

        b. Is this policy for athletes who are being recruited or even after they sign?

      • JackBeav Says:

After they sign (not commit) it’s OK. If they’re a friend, then you can’t contact yourself… kidding. They can volunteer all the information to you that they want. If you’re at a BBQ with them, it’s already a volunteer contact, so you can talk all you want. If you go to an official event for their sport, you have to wait until they approach you… unless you are attending at their (or their family’s) invitation.

        • JackBeav Says:

I may be wrong about contacting the coach. I haven’t really tried, and I probably won’t. But I have to look into it again.

One thing I do know is that some of these kids do read these blogs, and a couple have contacted me for one reason or another.

You might want to make a ‘contact’ tab or info block for any such occasions. I would suggest creating a secondary email address for this so you can easily filter any messages.

        • angrybeaver Says:

A contact option is a good idea.

      • angrybeaver Says:

I think this would still be neat, even if it’s with guys who recently signed. There are plenty of questions I can think of for those guys that would make for good insight.

        • JackBeav Says:

It’s a great idea. I’m just saying be careful, and warn others to take care as well.

      • JackBeav Says:

One example that really pushes the bounds is a recent article about Emerson Murray (Cal hoops guard) and his participation with the FIBA Canada U18 team. Another participant for that team is Kyle Wiltjer, and a recent article had Wiltjer stating that Murray was pushing him toward Cal. Since Murray is a member of the team with Wiltjer, he can push all he wants while they are together as that team… within limits (promises, etc.). But since their tourney in San Antonio, Wiltjer says they’ve been in contact and discussing Cal hoops during those contacts.

So long as Wiltjer has been the one initiating the calling/emailing/twittering/facebooking/etc, Cal has nothing to be worried about. But if Murray is the one who initiates contact, then Cal can easily be found to have committed a secondary violation.

      • JackBeav Says:

I think the rules extend to players who have committed as well. While they are only committed, they are still individuals who can contact other prospects and recruit them to come play with them at their committed school. Once they sign a LOI, they can’t do that anymore.

        • angrybeaver Says:

Yeah, I edited my post to say “signed” instead of committed. I realized the error right away.

  2. angrybeaver Says:

I’d be more interested in contacting recruits/signees we didn’t get. Asking them why they didn’t like OSU, what could improve, etc. I think that would be fascinating, and it’s an angle that is never played up. Maybe they all give me the cold shoulder, but then I just write a piece about what dicks they are. :D

  3. IDon'tBelieveInJessie Says:

Wow, what a bushel full of ignorance you’re showing.

Yeah, good luck with your “improves the blog’s credibility” angle a new domain name will have (ooooh, $5 from godaddy to actually have a domain – LOLOLOL!) and your delusional belief that you’ll actually be interviewing recruits with any questions, let alone hard hitting ones like you say.

Seems at least Jack is only half as stupid as you are and sees some trouble with all that, even if you could pull it off.

The train wreck that is the site just keeps getting better!

Any chance you’ll also update us on the best sources to steal content from? Perhaps give a 5* to a Blitz article you stole from… a 4* from a post on the Blitz subscriber board about eligibility updates… maybe only a 2* for Scout when they report days after the fact that Akuna is in (whom you doubted would make it).

Keep trying to keep the farce alive!

    • JackBeav Says:

Was there an actual point to that comment? You pretty much said that godaddy pays people $5 to have a domain then rambled on about something less intelligent.

Come on, person with a scattered thought process. Wrap it up and make your point. Otherwise we end up with some 4 am drunk and scatter-brained comment that ends with a sentence using the word ‘keep’ twice.

Nobody should have to suffer through that. It’s just not humane.

    • JackBeav Says:

And I should say that your use of ‘bushel’ is incorrect. Bushel is a unit of measure, not an actual container. You probably meant to use the term ‘bushel-basket’ in your reference to ignorance.

But I get it. It’s hard not to be that which you describe when you’re trying to get five pecks in your bushel-basket.

    • angrybeaver Says:

I said Akuna had a 51% chance of making it in. He made it in. Your point is?

    • angrybeaver Says:

It’s funny that you say my report is idiotic, yet you also say I stole it from Angie Machado, whom in your mind is a genius. Without going to much into an intelligence diatribe, I do wonder if you’re smart enough to comprehend that disconnect.

      • BeavGirl Says:

all these guys–antiangry/jessie,etc. sound mildly autistic. i almost feel bad i mean jesus

        • The Anti AngryBeaver Says:

          LOL!

          Thanks for a GREAT laugh!

I feel far more badly fo you, that you actually follow angry and what he has to say.

  5. JackBeav Says:

Tuivailala is in. Thompson and Marable soon to come.

    • angrybeaver Says:

      “Tuivailala is in.”

      Nice!

    • angrybeaver Says:

I found this guy to be intriguing. Sounds like Paea light edition.

    • JackBeav Says:

He’s apparently anywhere between 6’3″-230# and 6’8″-310#. We’ll see when tape of fall camp comes out.

  6. Anybody know what happened with Happy Iona? Did he just never qualify and will likely end up in JC? Probably old news, I just never heard. Thanks.

    • JackBeav Says:

Yeah, he just never got it together in school. And he’s too far behind to make it up in a summer session and fall testing. So he’s going to go the JUCO route.

I understood his problem to be a poor attitude borne of language problems rather than one of intellectual capacity. So who knows? He really wants to be a Beav, so maybe we see him in a couple years.

Then again, maybe he becomes another in a long line of no-shows.

    • angrybeaver Says:

Iona’s film was pretty meh. Never understood the 4-star rating on that guy.

    • JackBeav Says:

He has a great push move, and really good hands. Teach him some other techniques, and he can wreak some havoc in the middle.

  7. uofduck Says:

    Okay Beavo’s

Who is tougher for ya, TCU, or BSU? Both returning a lot of players, both away games, both beat each other in the last 2 bowl games.

I hope you beat BSU, they talk a lot of smack after our pathetic showings against them. They also boast that you don’t have a chance against them at home. I am not so sure, but…

    • JackBeav Says:

Different levels of tough, but I’m going to say that Boise will be tougher. TCU loses an All-American DE in Hughes, both long-time starting corners, and another nationally recognized player in their LB Washington. I think they’ve also lost both tackles… one a three year starter.

So we’ll see how well they restock.

Boise will be trying to break Miami’s home win streak when we visit. They might also be wounded by VaTech. So I’m not sure what Boise team we’ll see. But I don’t think Petersen let’s his team go unprepared for us.

      • The BSU-Va Tech game is one of my most anticipated games this fall. A big test for BSU. And it will be interesting to see how their defense performs without Wilcox. I’m actually thinking about going to it, even though I’m not a fan of either team, since its here in Maryland.

    • ObjCritic Says:

That’s a tough one to call. Like BSU, TCU has a high number of returning players, including an efficient QB. I think the TCU game may be a bit distracting for OSU (stadium, perhaps too much focus on Rodgers return to Texas) and like OSU’s chances better at BSU. I think BSU will be very good again, but challenged by the Rodgers brothers and the other OSU skill position players. Plus, if OSU DOES lose at TCU, I think they’ll be fighting more by the time they get to BSU.

      • ObjCritic Says:

Oh, and I expect Katz may struggles with TCU’s defensive alignments.

    • My guess is TCU will be the tougher game. First game of the season, “away”, and against a really good defense with a new QB. Not a good recipe for Riley’s teams.

BSU will also be tough, and I think both will be losses. But, I think the loss of Wilcox to Tennessee will have a pretty big impact, especially early this season. He made them a complete team. Plus, as mentioned by a previous poster, going to Boise will be more familiar and less of a distraction than at Jerry’s World.

      • angrybeaver Says:

I agree, Wilcox leaving is big. I still don’t see the Beavs stopping Moore.

  8. BeavFan Says:

it’s clear that beavocalypse, jackbeav, beavgal, objcritic and angrybeaver are all the same person. that’s 30 of 35 responses onthis post. do you ever get tired of deceiving, hiding, and using fake names? i’m sure you can justify it in your head, but what type of person does that? if you think i’m wrong then turn on the IP address option.

    • JackBeav Says:

Tell us how it’s clear. You said it. Back it up with some concrete evidence. Since the writing styles and vocabularies are all vastly different, it’s not clear from anything on this site. So maybe you have some video of me here in Eugene sitting next to angry in SoCal. Wait, we couldn’t be sitting next to each other. Sorry, I forgot we were supposed to clearly be the same people… um… person.

And there is no option to display IP addresses on WordPress. There’s so much liability involved that the host would be shut down within a day of doing so. Are you an identity thief looking to hack some Beav fans? That wouldn’t be very nice.

Now I doubt that your half-witted attempt to besmirch someone is anything but a scam. You’re a thief. Aren’t you? Admit it. It’s clear as day.

Do you ever get tired of deceiving, hiding and sscamming people? I’m sure you try to justify it in your head, but what type of person does that?

    • “do you ever get tired”

Seems like one could ask the same of you, doesn’t it?

    • angrybeaver Says:

He’s an obsessed stalker. He will continue to read my blog despite anything he says.

    • JackBeav Says:

The thing is… he likes this forum, but he thinks he has to try to be mean… in a ‘six year old likes a girl’ sort of way.

He’ll grow out of grabbing his own poo and flinging it in all directions…

      …we hope.

      • angrybeaver Says:

I think he likes this string of replies…toward him. He probably gets little attention in real life or on blitz. I have to admit, it’s funny. On this forum, we all rip him as an idiot; on the forum he’s from, they all praise him and treat him like royalty. Human behavior is bizarre.

      • JackBeav Says:

Maybe he’s a masochist. I know he can see that the gravatars are all different for us. That should tell him something about IP addresses right off the bat.

In fact, I think his lack of intelligence is so silly that no real person could have created that post. My conclusion is that you are he. You just created his persona in order to tweak minds.

And your gravatar is different because you run next door to make the idiot posts…

        … or something like that.

        ADMIT IT! It’s obvious.

      • angrybeaver Says:

actually, all it takes for the gravitar to be different is using a different email address (i think?). i know i signed in with the wrong email once and i had a blue one.

        • angrybeaver Says:

          Let’s test that theory.

        • angrybeaver Says:

          yeah, seems true.

        • JackBeav Says:

          Blows that theory. Oh well.

        • JackBeav Says:

Maybe he’s me, and I just succumb to an idiot alter ego for periods of time, and I post stupid stuff like this so I can argue with my original self.

Now I have the urge to not watch “Being John Malkovich.”

          • angrybeaver Says:

i can see who it is via ip. it’s not you, don’t worry.

            • BeavGirl Says:

              alright guys i admit

              its me

  9. ObjCritic Says:

It doesn’t bother me if this site has a small number of users or responders to a given post. The quality of discussion is far above that options like oregonlive or pure-orange.

The distinguishing characteristic in comparison to those sites is the acceptance here that its all right to critically question your team and its actions, as opposed to blind support that usually devolves into juvenile diatribes between opposing fan bases.

    • angrybeaver Says:

We have over 100 unique users/commentors. That should go way up this coming season. This blog is not even 1 year old. Things are slow now because…well things are slow. I’ve been busy, too. Things will pick up in about two weeks.

    • angrybeaver Says:

And your point is true–we have a better handle on our emotions here and more objectivity than other sites.

    • ObjCritic, I second all of what you said.

The Oregonlive forums are huge piles of you know what.

    • The Anti AngryBeaver Says:

      Couldn’t disagree more.

Oregon Live is a BS site that turns into back and forth between Oregon/OSU and the ocassional Husky, Coug, Bronco, etc

Pure-Orange is a site where you can actually gain factual information and insight into OSU athletics. As well as have good conversation with other OSU fans. Although it is a tad annoying how if you say anything negative your post gets deleted or people tell to GFY. I would agree it catiers to the ‘homers’

This site is about 90% negative. Not cynical, just plain negative. And that is mine and many other fan’s problem with it. It’s rather pathetic how much time and energy is spent on the negative.
‘Oh our recruits aren’t in the bridge program, they’re not coming, Riley sucks as a recruiter’ Well no, they just didnt enroll yet. Two weeks later, hey everyone’s in.

Pat Casey sucks as a coach (or as angry says manager), no actually he is one of the best in the country. 64 teams make the tourny. Only one wins, you’re not going to win’em all.

Mark Bankers defense is horrible, he needs to leave. No, he’s not horrible. He has his weaknesses, for sure. But he’s also produced some damn good defenses as well.

I could go on, but I think you get my point. If Angry truly wants to create a new site and have it be informative and open dialog, then perhaps he should try to be a bit more level headed. The thought of Angry contacting recurits scares the hell out of me. You are the very last person that should try to sell OSU to anyone. Much less a 5* recruit. One look at your site and I promise you, they’re going to see OSU is a negative light.

Heck, maybe I’ll start my own site for the common fan. Someone that loves OSU and the Beavers, and is proud of their school win or lose. But can also wonder….is Riley really that great of a coach? Can he win the big game? etc etc. You need balance….that is what is lacking with most sites. And why this site is no different from the others, this one just has a negative undertone.

      • angrybeaver Says:

All this says to me is you don’t read the site. I’m “negative” about 65% of the time and positive 35%. Those numbers make a lot of sense when you consider how much OSU needs to improve to become relevant.

      • JackBeav Says:

This is actually a decent post. It’s not correct, and I’ll say why. But it’s finally something concrete.

First, you CAN disagree more since your first thought was completely harmonious with the previous comment.

Pure Orange looks to be populated with some guys interested in OSU sports, some interested in just being homers, and some interested in spamming porn. By the post counts, it looks like it doesn’t get much action. And it’s hard to navigate smoothly. But it is what it is, and it’s available for anyone to read.

” ‘Oh our recruits aren’t in the bridge program, they’re not coming, Riley sucks as a recruiter’ ”
It’s the ONID registry in which they were not found. The comment was made that this was probably not a great source since some kids were yet to attend START and the BEST Bridge programs. Except for grey shirts, Marable, Molesi, Thompson and Glover have yet to be seen. Two will most likely be here (Marable and Thompson). But where are the other two?
And it’s not that Riley’s a poor recruiter. It’s that the top level players that he recruits find several reasons not to attend OSU. Some are simply perception while some are real. Both need to be dealt with by individuals within the system as well as by the community as a whole.
Without athletic depth, the Beavs are only a couple players and years away from starting another decades-long skid.

        So:
“Well no, they just didnt enroll yet. Two weeks later, hey everyone’s in.”
… tells us that you have not read the whole discussion, and you are not actually aware of our team’s full status.

“Pat Casey sucks as a coach”
Has this ever been said? I guess we can look back and see if it was said, and , if so, in what context it was said.
He made some strange personnel decisions throughout the year. I wasn’t happy with much that he did in the middle of the season, and it was only over the last couple weeks that I thought he started to manage effectively. It was too little, too late. But you are correct. We can’t win them all.
Btw angry, we need a post to update us on baseball prospects and where they’re headed. I’m most excited to see Wetzler and Rodriguez next year, and I think they’re committed to enroll.

“Mark Bankers defense is horrible, he needs to leave. No, he’s not horrible. He has his weaknesses, for sure. But he’s also produced some damn good defenses as well.”
How do you get from ‘his defense is horrible’ to ‘he’s horrible’? That’s comparing apples to lakes. We all agree that he has produced some great defenses. But those defenses also had some great players. Most people get upset with Banker over his CB philosophy. If you’ve ever been to a game in which the opposing QB ‘gets it’, you start to hear the OSU faithful boo every time our corners are beat by a high fade because Banker doesn’t allow them to turn and look for the ball in flight. I understand the philosophy, but it has proven to be flawed to the tune of at least two losses per year–UA, Cincy, USC last year. If he doesn’t relent on this one ‘weakness’ then we can just handicap ourselves with those two losses at the beginning of every season.

I promise you that many many other NCAA programs also have critical and insightful blogs and forums associated with their fandoms. Most of them are the traditional powers that be. Many recruits are not afraid of criticism if they find truth in what’s written. And there are so many varying voices in these threads, that the truth can be found in one form or another. Most athletes I know or have known can’t stand the head-up-buttedness of some fansites. They love that their names get out there, but they can’t stand that everyone is made out to be an elite recruit sought by everyone. Why would an OSU booster from Blitz not scare you as much?

Wouldn’t an actual conversation temper what you think is negative about this site? What happens when we hear Owa and Lyerla say the same things?

I do appreciate that you had an actual conversational comment. Thanks.

        • angrybeaver Says:

“But where are the other two?”

I don’t see Welch in there, either. So, three.

There were only 4 guys on that list I was really concerned about and only 1 is in. Do I want them all in? Do I want to be wrong? You bet.

        • JackBeav Says:

Welch was always a grey shirt, so he’s scheduled to take more HS classes in the fall to erase some poor frosh/soph grades.

Those early HS grades are what kept other Pac 10 schools from chasing him.

        • angrybeaver Says:

He had “interest” from 20 schools but just 1 offer. That says it all. He’s a greyshirt, but he’s not playing football for a while.

I don’t personally know what his problem is, but a former co-worker who is now a coach in SoCal told me he just mailed in his frosh or soph year (or both). Then someone had a good sit-down with him, and he’s been nose to the grindstone since.

I wouldn’t doubt that several schools were at least interested. A 10.55 hundred time is nothing to sneeze at.

His athletic eligibility is expended in the CIF, but he’s still able to attend school until he corrects his past.

I heard a similar story about Tuivailala (and half his HS team). There were some 30 kids who bagged their frosh year only to have some coaches and parents get together and give them the what for. Only two didn’t catch up in time to graduate with their class–Mana wasn’t one of the two.

Hey, I’m new here and don’t spend a lot of time on Beaver items cuz, well, I typically have better things to do, but I actually poke my head in once in a while because the topics are real and objective. I’m sure you will dimiss what I have to say as I am a Duck, but you guys are lucky to find a forum that is not “Homer Rides Again, and Again, and Again….” I don’t see this blog as slamming OSU, I just see it as digging deeper into why things are as they are. I don’t jump on to find dirt either, I just find it refreshing to hear real disscussions about the innerworkings of a program. If anything, this blog has allowed me to tollerate OSU a touch more because there actually are OSU fans who can actually reason. I wish I could find more of the same in the land of green and yellow.

I can’t believe I’m now getting lumped in as one of Angry’s alter egos.

I like what Angry has to say, but there have been times that he’s disagreed with me, and I think his 65/35 rating for cynical to positive is nothing like my 50/50, which is almost bipolar in its nature sometimes, but that’s a flaw I fess up to right now. In fact, when Angry has the new site up- I intend to write a series of posts called the Orange Lining, which will be pretty positive because as Beavers we have to find the bright side before one of our coaches gets weird and lets us down. (See Mark Banker against Oregon two years running now)

It’s obvious, Beavfan, that you’re projecting your lack of “a life” onto others by saying someone has the time or energy to create seven or eight alter egos to reply to their own blog, using different syntactical, grammatical, spelling, and other styles that are in a wide array in what is *gasp* a PUBLIC blog with responses from readers. But you’d rather support the same tired claim that you never back up. As a student of OSU and a fanatic supporter of their efforts, I deserve to get angry when I see us chase our own tail or stumble every single time we have a chance to take the next step.

But hey, feel free to continue reading and posting, your hatred only gains Angry more notoriety and makes the site more and more popular…and you’ll only see me blast you verbally time and time again because you insist that I’m someone I’m not, which I take exception to- you mindless piece of shit.

    There, woo saw…anger gone.

    • JackBeav Says:

Heh, heh… you wrote syntactical. Heh.

    • JackBeav Says:

      Or did I write it?

      Now I’m confused.

  13. angrybeaver Says:

    Anti-angrybeaver,

How come you pick on a “manager” vs “coach” slip yet you don’t mention how I was spot on in predicting baseball games this year? Who wrote that the baseball team wasn’t dead until after the Oregon series was played, and that if any series could turn the season around it was that one. Who wrote the Beavers would sweep that series since they had motivation (i.e. avoid a changing of the guard). There are plenty of examples where I am spot on. Why no mention of those? Instead you focus on the term “manager” (which Pat Casey is, even if you want to call him a butcher, a baker, or candlestick maker). The thing is, I grew up watching MLB…when a Beav makes solid contact I still say he got good “wood” on it. That you’re down to focusing so highly on nuance means you don’t have much to pick on at all.

Now, tell me how you can say I am an idiot for a post I made about academic casualties, and at the same time say I stole that very information from Blitz. My question is, do you think Blitz are idiots, or do you think I’m smart? Because you can’t have it both ways. That is called a paradox.

    I’m ghost.

I think you meant “gaffe” rather than “fib.”

      • angrybeaver Says:

        i think i meant slip.

  14. BeavFan Says:

beavocalypse – only angrybeavers would start this entire thread with, “Looking forward to seeing the new site. I’m sure it’s gonna look great. I STILL need to write something and contribute to the cause.”

The “cause”? What’s the “cause”? Only angrybeavers has a cause and it’s based on spite and bitterness. That’s no way to go through life…

Thank you multiple named proxy server stalker dude who phishes for IP addresses.

You have abviously missed your outing. If you scroll up about ten comments, you’ll see where you are made to look the fool… big time.

It’s a little hard to understand what you’re saying when you have both your feet in your mouth.

    • angrybeaver Says:

Technically, he doesn’t have to be going through a proxy server since just changing email addresses allows the change of usernames. If I had IP banned him and he showed up with the same username/email then for sure he’d have to be going through a proxy. Most people are not clever enough to set up their own proxies, and a lot of the once abundant and free proxy servers are now defunct and/or hard to find. He is a stalker, though.

      • JackBeav Says:

The IP address is a proxy host out of Ohio. I assume that BeavFan is not Mr. Moore (the registered owner). And I assume that he is also not the only user of that host since there are several registered complaints from a variety of sites related to the host’s range of IP addresses (and this one specifically).

        Phil Lesh steals yours.

Scout has a blurb about Hayden Hullana coming to Oregon State. The article I just linked says he’s coming as well, but there’s no mention of him playing football at OSU. In fact it starts out as if he will never play again after Saturday.

When I looked at Scout’s blurb, they hadn’t yet linked this article. Now I look back at it, and they have done so. I think someone finally read the article and realized they had made a boo boo.
